His first musical experience was playing saxophone in the school band, but didn't do anything serious with strings on it until his girlfriend gave him a banjo for Christmas in 1974. Of course, there was no choice but to marry her after that. Learning to play the banjo and a little bit of guitar kept him sane while getting his engineering degrees. He started playing in recreational bluegrass bands in Albuquerque where he first lived after getting out of school. Mostly he played private party gigs which featured a distinctive southwestern flair such as roast pig stuffed with green chili. His highlight gig was doing one live radio show on the University of New Mexico's radio station, KUNM. He moved to Woodland Park in 1984 and after settling in, started playing banjo in local bluegrass bands and acoustic guitar at church. Presently, he's not playing in any band and tends to play whatever strikes his fancy including bluegrass, country, folk, and old rock n roll. Having failed miserably at any 12 step program to play less music, his instrument collection has grown to include dobros, lap steel and electric guitars. Since coming to Colorado he has been primarily active in bluegrass music, with membership in the Colorado Bluegrass Music Society (CBMS) and the Black Rose Acoustic Society (BRAS). So, when the Teller County Pickers and Grinners, later to become MAMA, started in his home town, it was natural to get involved. He's been MAMA's resident "Atilla the booking guy" since 1999. (....And still married to the girl who gave him the banjo).
